Background

Hi, I’m Alfredo.  I am a landscape and architectural photographer based out of Denver, Colorado. I work full time as an Information Technology (IT) professional supporting the United States Space Program.   I often hear about engineers being photographers and I guess there is a good reason for that.  In my case, my passion for photography originates from my great need to be creative to help balance the analytical side used to support my daily Systems Architect job.

I am happily married to a wonderful wife and have an energetic 8 year old son. We have two mini dachshunds who also make great travel companions. While I am not out photographing, I love spending time with my family, hiking, reading, watching movies, and traveling.  I was born in 1974 in Mexico but grew up in a small town outside of San Antonio, Texas.

I started my photography career as an architectural photographer in San Antonio and had a small successful side business there. I was also photographing landscape and nature scenes around the Texas Hill Country. My love for nature and landscape photography was further strengthened after a trip to Death Valley in early 2019.  I will never forget photographing the dunes, salt flats, grand vistas that stretched for miles, and being surrounded by the most amazing solitude and quietness of the place.  I wanted to be closer to such amazing locations so in late 2019, I decided to move my family to Colorado for work, for a change of scenery and to experience a new home state with four seasons.  After my initial visit in 2016, I was drawn to the mountains and the diverse landscape opportunities.  Denver serves as a great home base for travel with its international airport and proximity to Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Artistic Vision

During the pandemic in 2021, I discovered that my photography up to that point was “results driven”, meaning that I was photographing with expectations and valuing the final image over the experience of being out in nature.   This is when I started to learn about “expressive photography” and an “explore driven” photography approach. In late August 2021, I put my new creative mindset into practice in a beautiful location in Colorado. I let go of expectations. I slowed way down and for the first time in a long time I truly observed the landscape. The results were personally rewarding and my love for the creative side of photography returned.

As I've grown as an artist, I find myself wanting to create images that whisper rather than shout as William Neill so eloquently stated. Eye catching color, exotic locations, and scenes with "epic" light all dominate our social media feeds in an attempt to hold our attention for a second or two but for me, I now focus on photographing more subtle, quiet scenes and enjoy connecting with nature through the experience of discovery.  When I am out in nature, I slow down and focus on visual design elements that catch my creative eye.  These include light, lines, shapes, patterns, texture, and color to help convey the experience of a location or to show the hidden beauty all around us.

I seek to create expressive images that reflect my artistic voice. To record something that the human eye cannot easily detect. To freeze a moment in time. To piece together visual elements in a cohesive way with purpose. To reveal a bit of myself and how I see the natural world. This is why I am drawn to intimate landscapes.
